Product Highlight: Sculpting Foam

This lightweight foam is perfect for sculpting and stamping and adds a new dimension to your pages. Sculpting Foam can be dyed with re-inker, stamped wet or dry, and comes in a resealable air-tight jar.

Tips for Using Sculpting Foam

·When using a new container of Sculpting Foam, work the foam around in your hands to remove air bubbles. If the foam is sticky or difficult to work with, spread it into a thin layer and allow it to sit exposed to the air for five to 10 minutes or until the desired consistency is reached.
· Sculpting Foam has a soft, foam-like feel that is very easy to work with and rolls out nicely using a rolling pin or any long, round object.
· Stamp an un-inked image into your Sculpting Foam-the impressions hold their shape very well. Painting over the stamped image with a waterbrush and re-inker will give it a more dimensional look.
· When stamping with ink on moist Sculpting Foam, use caution as the ink may bleed slightly.
· A stamped image applied to dry Sculpting Foam may require 1-2 minutes to air dry.
· You can dye your Sculpting Foam a different color using re-inker. Once dry, the color may change slightly. (Caution: Only add a couple of drops of re-inker at a time, as too much ink will cause the clay to become sticky)
· Sculpting Foam may change shape slightly as it dries.
· Cutting Sculpting Foam with scissors is not recommended if the clay is extremely moist. Once it is worked and becomes drier, scissors or a cutting knife can be used.
· Heat embossing will not speed up the drying process. Sculpting Foam will bubble in a way similar to Liquid Appliqué.
· Drying time varies, depending on the thickness and moisture of the Sculpting Foam and the climate.
· If the Sculpting Foam becomes too dry but is still pliable, try re-wetting it with a small amount of water or re-inker.

Ribbon Slides

These charming acrylic slides in two sizes are engraved with heartwarming words and can be threaded on ribbon for an endearing and sophisticated accent to any project. (Autumn/Winter Idea Book, page 89)

Add dimension to artwork

Tips and ideas for using Ribbon Slides:

Chalk the lettering to make it pop
Tie ribbon on each side
Thread ribbon through slide
Try using re-inker on the letters to make them stand out
White re-inker will enhance the white color of the letters. This is especially good to try with darker ribbon and dark cardstock.
Use Liquid Glass as an adhesive when you want to adhere the ribbon slide to the project. Place a few drops of Liquid Glass on the back and smooth across the slide.

The Skinny on StickStock
Popular vellum, linen, and twill specialty papers now come in 8 1/2" x 12 1/2" adhesive-back sheets-ready to peel and stick with no glue required!

Tips and ideas for using StickStock:
Use the heat tool for faster drying
Print on it in your home printer
Use the vellum for journaling
Print a photo on it
Fray the edges
Wrap dimensional element with linen or twill

When printing on StickStock vellum, be careful to make sure you are printing on the correct side
Because the vellum is see through, it can be difficult to tell which side is the front and which side is the backing. When printing on the StickStock twill, you need to adjust your printer settings. See the instructions that came with your StickStock for further printing directions.

CONVENTION NEWS!

There were lots of exciting announcements at the recent Close To My Heart convention. Many new products were announced that will be coming in the Fall Idea Book. But, with new product announcements, there's always a goodbye to a few of our favorites. Three new colors will be added to the color palette, but three will also be retiring. Golden Ember, Seafoam and Plum Mist will be retiring at the end of the year.

Technique Central - Cracked Glass

To acheive this effect, you need:

Clear embossing powder
Heat gun
Cardstock
Ink
Versamark
Sponge (optional)

Stamp image on cardstock color as needed.
Apply VersaMark over the entire piece of cardstock.
Cover entire image with embossing powder, and tap off excess powder
Heat powder with heat gun until melted
While the powder is still hot, add more powder over the cardstock.
Heat again until melted. The second layer will have a smoother look.
Repeat step 6 at least two more times
After heating the last layer of embossing powder, put the cardstock in the freezer for a minute or two to completely cool. When you take it out, the cardstock may be slightly warped. That is perfectly okay.
Bend cardstock carefully until embossed layer cracks. Repeat on different spots of your cardstock until you like the look of it.

If you'd like the cracks to show more, sponge dark colored ink over the entire image. The ink will get into the cracks, making them look more prominent.

Technique Central - Liquid Glass

Liquid Glass can turn basic art images into a three- dimensional high-gloss embellishment that will ornament your scrapbook layouts or cards. You will have so much fun applying this unique accent to your artwork!

Here's what makes Close To My Heart's Liquid Glass the product of choice:

Easy to use
Does not require mixing multiple liquids together
Container has a fine tip that allows precise application

Apply Liquid Glass to any image by squeezing a small amount out of the bottle and onto your art. I recommend that you apply a light coat first and then reapply as needed for the desired thickness. Drying time can vary from 15 minutes to several hours, depending on how thickly it is applied. While the items may be dry to the touch, I recommend allowing 24 to 48 hours for your items to seal. Trim any excess from your image after the longer drying period. Once dry, your images are ready to add to your card or scrapbook page.
Your image may be stamped, colored in with markers, water-brushed, colored with pencils, or whatever you desire. Whichever you choose, make sure your image is colored completely and cut out exactly the way you want it before you advance to the Liquid Glass process because the colored image can't be adjusted once the Liquid Glass is applied. After you learn the process for stamped images, you can easily apply the same techniques to Close To My Heart My Stickease for additional outstanding results. Liquid Glass may alter the color of some of the Close To My Heart inks, so make sure you test your stamped image before applying it to your final projects. Clean the tip of the applicator after each use to keep it from clogging.

Technique Central - Creating Texture with Foam

This is a quick and easy way to "texturize" any paper using tools and supplies you already have on hand. Be imaginative with your use of color and motion, and you'll be amazed at the beautiful patterns you create!

First, fold the foam from your stamp set in half, then in half again, creating a 3"x3" square. Then press the foam into your stamp pad until ink is visible on the foam.

Finally, press the foam onto your paper in a rolling motion, starting with your index finger and rolling across to your pinky until the desired texture is achieved. To clean your foam, spray with the Spritz Cleaner, then scrub on the Double Scrubber. Let the foam dry completely before placing it back into the stamp envelope.

Technique Central - Distressing with White Daisy Re-inker

Pastel palettes look great when slightly distressed, but traditional sanding and scissor distressing can look too harsh against soft colors. Distressing with our White Daisy reinker can give you a lot of different looks depending on the technique and tool you choose. The basic premise is the same in all three: squeeze a little reinker into a craft jar or lid. The rest of the technique will vary depending on the look you're going for, but remember; it is better to apply multiple thin coats instead of a single heavy one. Lighter papers will require fewer coats, and darker papers more.

When you're looking for a stronger, more dramatic look, a waterbrush is a great way to apply the ink more directly and to control the amount.

Create a distressed background technique using a stipple brush; simply dip the brush into the reinker, run it across some scrap paper a few times, and then brush it quickly across your probject. If you find that your brushstrokes look too deliberate - too intentional and well-placed - you can use this technique on an entire 12"x12" sheet of cardstock and then cut it down to the size you want.

When combining dark and light papers, a great way to match them up is to brighten the darker paper with a bit of faint distress around the edges. To achieve this effect, cut a round sponge into triangles, like a pizza, and dip the thin end into the reinker. Run it lightly across the edges of the paper, and voila!

This Month's Project Idea - Coffee Filter Books

Here I am again, making books out of household items. Chances are you have cone-shaped coffee filters in your kitchen; here's how to use them as album pages!
Supplies You'll Need:

4 Cone shaped coffee filters
Cardstock and/or patterned paper
scissors
Xyron machine or other permanent dry adhesive
photos
ribbon and/or fibers
embellishments

Using the coffee filter as a template, lay it on the back side of your cardstock, trace around, and cut.
Take the cardstock you just cut, place it face up onto the back side of your next sheet so that the two sheets are back-to-back, wrong sides together. Trace and cut.
Repeat steps 1 and 2 until you have enough to cover each side of all the coffee filters. If you want to do any stitching or inking on the pages, do it now before proceeding.
Run the paper pieces through a Xyron or use adhesive to adhere a piece of paper to each side to all of the coffee filters. When adhering, make sure that the two pieces don't stick together when the filter opens or else you won't be able to use the inside of the filter for journaling.
Add photos, journaling, and embellishments to each page. It's OK if any elements extend beyond the boundary of the filter - that's part of the visual interest!
To bind the album, punch holes and tie with ribbon, or stitch the pages together if you like.
Create inserts for your pockets; Tags work well to hold pictures and journaling. Top the tags with ribbons or fiber to make them easy to pull out and put back.

Technique Central - Making Your Own Rub-Ons

This technique is just too cool! Rub-ons are all the rage these days, but you may find it difficult to locate the perfect theme, color, etc. for your project. Well, now you can custom make your own!
Supplies you will need:

Transparency sheet or a piece of page protector, cut to fit your printer. (Most will be 8.5 x 11)
Popsicle stick (or similar object to rub the ink)
Computer and Word Processing Program
Printer

Open your Word Processing Program, and type the words you want to use for your rub-ons. Choose your favorite font, color, size etc. You can even add a graphic if you like.
Choose "Print". Click on "properties" and choose the following options: "Best Quality" (you want as much ink as possible on the transparency)"Mirror" or "Word Flip" (this will flip your text so that it's backwards.
Now print. If you're using a transparency, be sure and print on the slick side, not the rough side. If you're using page protector, either side is fine.
After it prints, set it aside to dry for 15 minutes. Don't touch it, it will smudge!
Choose the paper/project you want to use. Place the transparency, ink side down on the paper. Using the Popsicle stick, rub firmly across all the letters. Lift it up and voila! Your text is on your project!
Check your transparencies as there are two types: those for inkjet printers and then for laser printers. If you use the laser transparencies on the Inkjet printer, it just wont dry. A heat gun applied to it was better, but still would smudge. The inkjet worked like a charm. Try this technique today! Don't spend money on expensive rub-on embellishments!

Technique Central - Sewing on Pages

After much deliberation, I finally gave in and purchased a mini sewing machine on my most recent trip to the store for scrapbooking swag. I've only started experimenting, but I wanted to share what I've already learned:

Before you start to stitch, make sure your bobbin has enough thread to finish the job. If your bobbin runs out of thread midway, you'll be left with holes in the paper that you'll have to work to conceal.
Don't try to machine stitch more than 3 layers at a time.
Don't "knot" the thread as you would when sewing on fabric by going over the same spot repeatedly. Secure the thread underneath by adhering it to piece of paper, and it won't unravel.

Try some of these ideas!

Create your own backgrounds and borders by piecing together cardstock blocks or strips.
Create paper or fabric pockets to hold journaling blocks, extra photos, or simple memorabilia.
Stitch around lettering and titles.
Embellish journaling blocks.
Adhere vellum to your background. (Vellum is translucent, so it will often show the glue that lies beneath it. Try stitching it on instead.)

Bleaching
Bleach can be used to produce interesting results on colored cardstock. There are a simple few tips and tricks to stamping with bleach. When making a bleach pad, remember that bleach loses its effectiveness after prolonged exposure to air. After about fifteen minutes, the bleach will begin to lend weaker results. Also, depending on the brand of cardstock used, bleaching will produce various results. For instance, some blacks will bleach to a gray, others to brown and still others to a cream color.

You can use a bleach pen for small areas, or you can use your stamps and create your own bleach "stamp pad". Create a bleach stamp pad by folding a piece of white felt and place on a bleach safe plate. Pour enough bleach onto the felt so that it’s damp. You want to be able to “ink” your stamp, but not with so much bleach that it pools on top of the felt. Stamp as you normally would.

Enjoy experimenting with this technique - just remember to clean your stamps when you're done!

Technique Central - Including newspaper articles on your scrapbook pages

One of the biggest questions I get asked is how to include ephemera like newspaper articles, ticket stubs, etc on your scrapbook pages. Due to the high amounts of both lignin and acid in newsprint the paper deteriorates very quickly becoming brittle and turning yellow.

You have a few options when including ephemera on your pages:

Copy them onto acid free paper - You can simply scan them into your computer and print them out on cardstock.
Laminate the article - Laminating does not solve all of the problems with newsprint unfortunately. Lamination will simply trap the chemicals inside with the paper. It will still turn yellow and even the lamination film over time (decades) will start to deteriorate. It will, however, make the paper hold together and keep it from turning brittle. It will also prevent the acid from migrating to other parts of your page.
Use a memorabilia pocket - you can purchase these at your local craft store. Pockets will create a barrier between the item and your page.
Treat the paper with a deacidification spray or solution - Several sprays such as Archival Mist by EK Success are available to treat papers such as greeting cards, old letters, documents, and newspaper clippings that contain acid. The paper is still fragile and will need to be protected in your album after being treated with the spray.

This Month's Project Idea - Stuffed Six packs

Here's another great project using items that you already have in your house - and a great way to use up scraps! The base of this item is a cardboard six- pack holder, but you could also use a four-pack (some bottles of soda and coffee drinks come in packs of four). Just use a tape runner to adhere your paper, and embellish!

Before you tell me I'm crazy, here are some uses for this cool little project:

Holders for plastic spoons, forks, etc. at the holiday table
Fill with hair accessories or bath beads/oils,lotions as a gift for teens or a co-worker
Fill with different olive oil blends or sauces as a Christmas gift to someone who loves to cook
Include travel -sized baby lotion, baby shampoo, powder, some washcloths and a soft brush for a cute baby shower gift
Add markers, scissors, glue sticks, paint brushes and paint for the young "artist" in your life
Think also about washing out those coffee drink bottles and fill those with candy, peanuts etc

It's all about taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary! Try this project today!

The Scrapbook "Help Desk"

Before I started with Close To My Heart, I was a great collector of scrapbooking supplies: I had a crop case FULL of paper, albums and embellishements - and never scrapped one page. And why? This Month's Project Idea - Altered Lunchboxes

More altered items this month! These lunchboxes are HOT! The possiblities for adorable, embellished boxes like these are numerous. Think - a card organizer (as shown), a recipe box, addresses, pregnancy journal, or even a box that documents all of a new baby's "firsts" (first tooth, first words, etc)

Here's what you need:

A lunchbox (they're currently made by ProvoCraft and Basic Grey)
CTMH Level 2 paper pack with matching stickease
Assorted colors and width matching ribbons
Adhesive of your choice (tape runner and "red line" double stick tape were used here)
(Optional) Additional embellishments such as the chipboard letters and flowers shown here

Technique Central - Attaching transparencies

Using transparencies is one of my favorite scrapbooking techniques, and it creates such a professional, polished effect! However, it can be a challenge to attach them. Here are some simple techniques for attaching transparencies and overlays to your layouts:

Glue it down where it is covered up: Look for places on your layout where the transparency will be covered by other items such as photo mats and embellishments. These are the perfect places to hide your adhesive. It only takes a small bit of adhesive to hold the transparency in place.
Attach it with brads: Brads are one of the easiest embellishments to use. Simply poke a small hole, insert the brad, and open the prongs on the back.Hide the edge:Rather than using brads, cover the edge of the transparency with a strip of cardstock that matches the background paper.
Add an Eyelet: Like a brad, an eyelet will also work to attach transparencies and overlays to your scrapbook pages.
Glue behind the printing: Occasionally, pre- printed overlays, will have large areas that are printed with a design or text. This provides plenty of surface area for glue to be hidden behind. Use a clear adhesive runner so that the glue will not show through the printed surface.

These five solutions will make working with transparencies and clear overlays easier and quicker. Try one on your next scrapbook page!

This Month's Project Idea - Altered Clipboards

Altered items are all the rage these days -- altered journals, altered Altoid tins...the possibilities are endless! You can alter clipboards to become photo holders, chalkboards, or theme art. Any type of paper, embellishments, or mediums can be added to customize them. You can make them into wonderful gifts and wall decorations. Altered clipboards make great gifts for family members and friends. Try altering a mini clipboard for a teacher and turning it into a Post-It note holder. Alter one for a coach and include the team picture. They work great as a picture holder as well and you can change the photograph seasonally!

Lets get started! Gather your supplies:

Wood clipboard (sold at Kmart, Walmart, staples, etc) I prefer the ones with the bar clip oppose to the clamp style. It is much easier to work around the bar clip, the clamp clip has to be wired open to work on.
Modge Podge or Acrylic gel medium and foam brushes
Exacto blade and scissors
CTMH Level 2 paper pack with matching stickease
Assorted colors and width matching ribbons
(Optional) Beads or charms - Dangle Beads on a ribbon (sold at craft stores) can easily be added to the bottom of the clipboard. If you want to add a charm or dangle embellishment off the bottom you will need to drill a hole in the Clipboard. If you want to add a button embellishment off the top of the clip you will need wire to attach it.
(Optional) Acrylic paint - to paint your board

Wipe any dust and debris from the clipboard with a damp cloth.
(Optional) Paint your board OR cover the clipboard with CTMH Background & Texture paper
Apply Matte Acrylic gel Medium or modge podge to the back of the paper and burnish down to the clipboard. You can use a rubber brayer or old credit card to ensure you have pushed out all the air bubbles. Be sure to use a thin coat of modge podge and work fast this stuff dries quickly. You can use a Xyron for this step if you own one.
Add more layers as you go; Add more stickease and/or photographs to fill your board the way you like. You can even write on your board with our legacy writers.
Coat clipboard with Acrylic gel medium or modge podge to secure edges. Apply a thin coat, let it dry completely If not, wrinkling of the paper can occur and the Mod Podge can become cloudy rather than clear when it's finished. When front is dry coat the back as well.
Add your ribbons and embellishments. Just tie the ribbons on. I added star buttons by stringing them on the ribbon. Other wise you can wire them on or glue them on.

There are an endless variety of materials you can use for decorating. Pattern papers, fabrics, ribbons, fibers, buttons, beads, photos, transparencies, metal, cork, stamps and other ephemera work perfectly as accents. Acrylic and spray paints, crackle mediums, texture mediums, Lumiere Paint, dye and pigment inks also can be used to customize a clipboard. Not only are clipboards an affordable object to alter, they also provide a chance to experiment with new techniques and products. When you are done experimenting, you have a perfect home accent or gift to share with others!

The things you can do with wire are endless! It can serve as "that extra touch" you need to add a bit of whimsy and uniqueness to your scrapbook pages. Do you already have some wire in your stash but have been afraid to use it? If so, get twisting and try some of these wire ideas:

Twist into letters and words

Thread beads and charms

Make photo frame accents or photo "holders"

Hang things

Wrap around accents

Twist into shapes for bug antennas and wings,
braces, bike spokes, spiral on notebooks, hangers,
eye glasses, kitchen utensils, egg dippers for coloring
eggs... etc.

Wire comes in many different colors and in different thickness. Wire thickness is measured in "gauges" - the higher the gauge, the thinner the wire. You will find that the thinner the wire is, the easier it is to manipulate into the shapes you desire. It is best to stay away from wire you see in a hardware store and instead use wires (such as Artistic Wire), that are marketed specifically for use in your scrapbooks. Copper wire is a good choice since it has more "give" than others and more importantly, it is resistant to corrosion.

Tools

You can have a lot of fun using wire alone but tools make your cutting and shaping hassle-free:

Wire Cutters: Allow for close cuts in one easy snip. If you decide to use scissors, be sure to use an old pair and not your favorite scrapbooking scissors as wire will nick the blades.
Round Nose Pliers: Used to form intricate details. Helps you bend your wire into loops and rounded bends. Very helpful when bending thicker gauges of wire.
Nylon Jaw Pliers: Useful to flatten wire spirals and straighten wire as it comes off the spool.
Wire Jig: Allows you to make shapes by placing pegs in specific spots and wrapping your wire the pegs to create your wire accents.

Attaching Wire

Wire can be attached in several different ways. Different projects lend themselves to different methods, so don't be afraid to try something new.

Glue - This method works best on shapes that have a little bulk to them. In the bulky spots, place a little glue and then put it down on your page. Put a piece of waxed paper and then a heavy book to hold the wire in place while the glue dries.
Adhesives - Adhesives that I find work best with wire are Sticky Dots and Wonder Tape. Both are extremely sticky and again like glue, work best on shapes that have a little bulk to them so you have somewhere to place the adhesive without it showing.
Stitching - To stitch your wire shape on your page, simply place your shape in the desired spot, and use a needle to make a hole on either side of your wire paying special attention to the curves of your piece. Then, use wire, embroidery floss, or translucent cording used for jewelry-making to "sew" the wire onto your page. Twist the wire or tie the floss or cording on the backside to attach. This is a good way to attach wire letters.

Safety

Chemically, wire will not hurt your scrapbook pages. What you have to be worried about is abrasion. To combat this, make sure your wire accents are not facing a photograph on the opposing page when you close you scrapbook and of course, always store your albums in an upright position.
